Op I Need A Job… So I Can Buy More Auto-Tune een retrosoulalbum te noemen zou een zeer zware understatement zijn. In 1954 ging de toen 12-jarige Jerry Williams de studio in om zijn eerste plaat op te nemen, een bluesnummer met een opvallend volwassen performance.

Sindsdien is er naast een naamswijziging naar Swamp Dogg bijzonder weinig veranderd. Hij maakt nog steeds op blues geënte soul met onmiskenbaar rauwe vocalen waarbij niet iedere toon even zuiver gezongen wordt.

I Need A Job… So I Can Buy More Auto-Tune is de spirituele opvolger van het in 2018 verschenen Love, Loss And Auto-Tune. Het spreekt voor zich dat de albumtitel ironisch bedoeld is, want Swamp Dogg gebruikt het apparaat niet om zijn zang zuiverder te laten klinken, integendeel, hij gebruikt het om gevoelens als ontheemdheid in zijn muziek door te laten klinken. Want waarom zou je je stijl veranderen op je 78ste? Zeker als je in de loop der jaren een trouwe schare fans hebt opgebouwd die voor het ware geluid gaan en niet voor een opgepimpte leugen.
